Sacred Reading, AR Testing, Book Talking, and Taking Care of Business

Sacred Reading Time  While I meet with a few more students individually today to make reading goals, I would like to offer you some class time today to simply read and commune with your new books. Some of you will be invited to read outside, others in a cozy corner of the room, while most of you will hopefully become enraptured by the words on your pages right at your desks. Enjoy this time!

Accelerated Reader Testing  Now that you each of you has an AR reading goal, it's time to head over to the Accelerated Reader website and take your first quiz of the school year and hopefully earn your first points. Earlier this year, I read aloud the story Thank You, Mr. Falker. Now it's time to test your comprehension and take the quiz.

Introducing Book Talks  What's a "book talk"? According to the Pine Peaks LIbrary District,a book talk is "NOT a review or a book 'report.' A book report tells somebody you read the book; a booktalk tries to convince the person to read the book. The key to booktalking is to 'sell, don't tell.' Thus, a booktalk is more of an advertisement or a commercial. A booktalk is a Performance - you want to 'hook' the listeners, to do everything, use every trick you can think of to make the booktalk fun, exciting, and suspenseful."

This quarter each of you will be required to give to give a book talk on one of the books you read. To get you comfortable with the idea, I will periodically be sharing book talks by other students so you can see what they look like. Today, meet Andy, who will be booktalking the novel The Hunger Games.

Academic Business Time  Tomorrow there are several important assignments due for this class, including the Character Traits in "Eleven" assignment and the Newsela 'Pokemon Go' article. If need be, you may use the remainder of class time to work on completing your assignments. Otherwise, you may use this time to silent read, take AR quizzes, read Newsela articles of your choice, or practice your typing.

Homework  (1.) Complete your Character Traits in "Eleven" and  your Newsela 'Pokemon Go' article assignment, both of which must be completed by tomorrow, Friday, September 2. (2.) Read your new A.R. book for at least 30 minutes tonight.

It's Library Day!

Library Visit   We are heading over to the library today to select your first batch of Accelerated Reader books. You may pick out any book you want as long as it is within your ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development) and an appropriate color level. Remember, you don't want a book that's too easy or too hard; rather, you want a book that "just right" for you. Most importantly, you want to find a book that's interesting and that you are passionate about reading.

Enjoy your books! Take care of them. And make sure an A.R. book is always with you because there will be times when you'll have the opportunity to read, write about, and discuss your book in class.  Happy reading!

Homework  (1.) Complete your Character Traits in "Eleven" and  your Newsela 'Pokemon Go' article assignment, both of which must be completed by this Friday, September 2. (2.) Read your new A.R. book for at least 30 minutes tonight.
